Word (DOCX) to Markdown converter
Drop a Word document and get Markdown back: headings by their level, lists as lists, tables as GFM tables and links as links. The .docx is unpacked and parsed in your browser, with no server, no upload and no account.

The document is read in this browser tab. Nothing is uploaded.
Runs entirely in your browser — your file is never uploaded.
How to convert a Word document to Markdown
- Drop a
.docxfile on the box above or choose it with the file browser. Files saved by Word, Google Docs, Pages, LibreOffice and most other editors work. - The tool opens the file’s package, reads the text and formatting, and rebuilds Markdown: Heading 1–6 styles become
#–######, list numbering becomes bullets or numbers, and tables become GFM tables. - Copy the Markdown, download it as a
.mdfile, or open it in the editor to check the rendering and keep editing.
What converts, and what does not
- Text, headings, lists, tables, hyperlinks, bold, italic, strikethrough and line breaks all come through. Word’s own styles are what make this reliable: the document says which paragraph is a heading.
- Images, text boxes, footnotes and comments are skipped. A picture has no Markdown equivalent without a public URL, and this tool cannot publish one.
- Layout is not preserved, because Markdown has no page layout. What you get is the document’s structure in a form you can version, diff and publish.
Frequently asked questions
Is my Word file uploaded?
No. A .docx is a ZIP of XML parts, and this page reads it inside the browser tab: the file is inflated and parsed locally, never sent anywhere.
Why does an old .doc fail?
A .doc is the binary format from before Office 2007, and a password-protected .docx is encrypted. Neither can be read as an archive, so save the file as an unprotected .docx first.
Are headings and lists detected automatically?
Yes, from Word’s own styles and numbering. If a document was formatted by hand (bold lines instead of Heading styles), turn those paragraphs into headings in Word first: guessing from font size would mangle ordinary text.
Does it work offline?
Once the page has loaded, yes: parsing happens in the browser with no network access, so it keeps working when the connection drops.
Want to export back to Word?
The Markdown to DOCX converter builds a Word file with native heading styles and tables, and the editor renders the Markdown with a live preview before you do either.
